The seventeenth-century artistic literature has laid the theoretical foundations for the division into genres of the various categories of iconographic painting which it is composed. This classification has since come into common usage and in the language of art in such a way so pervasive as to make it seem inherent to the art itself; is implicitly passed into the background of the fact that, like any cultural phenomenon, even the pictorial genres have their start time that influenced the definition and identity. Where to find, then, the origins alcove of this phenomenon? The theme is rich and fascinating, is the heart of this volume, the result of the collective effort of a group of scholars who have shared and compared different methodologies alcove and research background. The eight case studies, moving between Venice, alcove Rome, Cologne, Frankfurt and Antwerp, focus some of the key issues related to the development of European painting at the turn of the '500 and '600: the practices of the workshop and the specialization of the artists, the professionalization merchant painters and their connections with the merchants, not to mention some well-known types of painting, from the cabinet paintings (or cabinet pictures) painted landscapes, up to a redefinition of the visual devotional painting.
